Where exactly are HPMC capsules used? You might find them everywhere around you. Although it's just a small shell, because it's made from plants and is particularly stable, more and more industries are using it to "contain things."
This is its biggest application. Things like probiotics and certain plant extracts (such as cranberry powder and grape seed powder) are particularly susceptible to moisture. If ordinary gelatin capsules are used, the powder will absorb the water from the capsule shell, causing the powder to clump and spoil, or the capsule shell itself to become brittle and break. Because HPMC capsules are very dry (with extremely low water content), they act like a dry protective suit for these moisture-sensitive nutritional supplements, keeping them fresh for a long time.
Some Western medicine ingredients are quite reactive (such as certain antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs). If they encounter traditional animal gelatin, a chemical reaction called "cross-linking" occurs, resulting in the capsule shell hardening, making it difficult to dissolve and release the medication. In this case, pharmaceutical companies will switch to plant-based capsules, because HPMC is particularly "inert" (highly unreactive), and regardless of what powder is inside, it doesn't react much, ensuring stable drug efficacy.
Many people now prioritize "purity" when buying health supplements. If you buy a bottle of vitamins claiming to be "all-natural herbal" or "vegetarian," but the capsule shell is made from pig skin, that's a bit contradictory. Therefore, to ensure the product is true to its claims from the inside out, many high-end brands specifically use HPMC capsules, allowing them to legitimately print "Vegetarian" or "Vegan" labels on the bottle, targeting consumers who value quality of life.
If a pharmaceutical company wants to sell its drugs worldwide, religious beliefs are a major hurdle. Some regions do not consume pork products (such as halal food), and some regions advocate against killing animals. Using HPMC capsules is much more convenient because they contain no animal ingredients and have a built-in "universal acceptance" property. They are not subject to religious or dietary restrictions, whether in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, or Europe, which is a significant commercial reason why manufacturers prefer them.
In developing new drugs, researchers often need to conduct "double-blind trials" (where neither the doctor nor the patient knows whether they are receiving the real drug or a placebo). Because plant-based capsules are easier to control in terms of appearance and dissolution time, they are frequently used as carriers in these experiments to disguise various medications and ensure that the experimental results are not affected.
